The GUNJA village: 600 years of a standing family history.

Another sunny morning, and another destination for our Korea roaming team SPOTLIGHT. We went to yet another village but with a different “mood” to it. As soon as you arrive, the AN-DONG’s GUNJA village will strike you from the very first look. Rather than a village, I would personally call it a residential complex. It is actually the home for 20 generations of the Royal descendents of the SILLA dynasty; the GWANG-SAN KIM lineage, famous for producing outstanding Confucian scholars and for having being active in politics too.

Our guide was himself one of the KIMS, and he lives with his extended family in the GUNJA village. It was just amazing to me how this family preserved 600 years of history within the old buildings, the family shrines, the pavilions and lecture halls of the village. No wonder that more than just one house were designated National Cultural Properties.

Mr. KIM was nice enough to offer us tea, and then led us to a very interesting tour around the village. “This is the scene during fall season, if you comeback this coming winter, it will be a completely different sight. And so is the same for spring and summer.’’

Every photo taken there was a potential shot for one of those Calendars with beautiful natural scenes in them. It is probably the reason why many Historical Dramas and other shows were shot here. “We do allow such temporary events to take place in the village, but we will never open a restaurant or have shops inside like some other villages. Even the public bathroom for the visitors can be sometimes a source of uncomfort. This is our house after all. “

It just reminded me of our previous visit to the YANG-DONG village, and people there also are trying to preserve the privacy of their homes and yet promote their history and lifestyle to the public.

There was so much to see in the village, and the tons of photos we took were apparently not enough. But as we has a very special lunch awaiting us, we ended up saying goodbye to Mr.KIM, promising him to come visit him once again during winter to witness the breathtaking change of nature he talked so passionately during our visit.

Lunch was basically a feast! It was a local ANDONG area traditional style menu, with a variety of dishes that come all at once, and are served in a beautiful setting.

As the main dish, we had different types of fish, including Shark, and the local style mixed vegetables with rice BIBIM BAB.

The side dishes were anything but extra complimentary, to me; they looked like a necessity that should be demanded back in Seoul “SIGH”. The countless Yummy side dishes like fried Tofu, boiled eggs, more marinated fish, KIMCHI Etc just kept on coming. As for dessert, we were served Sweet rice drink and rice cake, which was the PERFECT ending.

It`s been exactly a year since I have moved to Korea, and I can say that I have pretty much smoothly adapted to life in Seoul. But after a while, one starts wondering if there is more to this big city, and if THIS is the ‘’Real’’ Korea as it is so heavily advertized.

They say you get what you wish for once you stop looking for it, and it is exactly what happened to me. About a month ago, I received an invitation from the presidential council on national branding of Korea, and it is about a tour around the Kyung-Sang province to discover its charm and main attractions. I couldn’t miss such a chance! With not much expectation to be truthful, I joined a team of four participants, and we headed to our first destination which is the Yang-Dong village in Kyung-Ju.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I was sent back to a 1000 years back, where nature and people truly were one. Large and beautiful green fields turned yellow announcing the arrival of a much awaited fall season. And unique Korean traditional style houses that looked like they were out of some animated series! They were too unreal and beautiful to me who comes from a totally foreign background to Asia. But, there is nothing as real as the experience one can have in this village.

Recently inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list as one of Korea’s historical villages, this place used to be the home of the Nobility for generations during the SILLA dynasty. Now, real people are still living there while the recent media attention that the village suddenly received has brought much more visitors.

‘’Imagine being in your apartment chilling, then suddenly someone comes and knocks on your door telling you with such clear voice they’re here to use the bathroom! Wouldn’t that make you angry?”

”I also wish people would be more considerate of the conservative mode of life we still run in the village and pay more attention to the way they dress before visiting the village. Being way too ‘’ Exposed’’ tend to make the seniors around here especially uncomfortable. ‘’ Said the Chief Representative of the Yang-dong village.”

What makes this place so attractive is the fact that real people are actually still living in the village. Unlike most touristic folk villages you may visit in Korea, the houses are still occupied by the descendants of those nobles all the way back from the SILLA dynasty, and they are still working on those large fields just like their ancestors had servants for that to be done. Some of them now run restaurants in one of their own houses’ large rooms, and there is no need to describe just how DELICIOUS and authentic the food tastes.

‘’ How long have you been running this restaurant, grand-ma? ‘’, ‘’for a very long time, a very long time…It’s our house you know ‘’, said the grand-ma who personally cooks and serves in her own little restaurant, with the help of her daughter-in-law.

We were served the biggest amount of side dishes I have ever had since coming to Korea, not mentioning the main dishes. We ordered warm noodles with seaweed, and healthy brown rice steamed and wrapped in some huge leaf. It left the rice taste and smelled so good.

As we continued our little exploration of the rest of the village, I couldn’t help but remember what the chief representative said about how uncomfortable it gets at times when the visitors fail to remember that these are real houses with real people. Thus, we should be just as much respectful and careful as we would when invited over someone else’s place.

‘’ Not that we are ungrateful for the many people who come visit our village, buy our goods and eat in our restaurants but…I’m afraid of a day that will come where our village is no more ‘’ OURS ‘’. Keeping the simplicity of this place is our biggest concern. I personally wouldn’t mind having just very few visitors who understand our culture and respect our way of life, than have hundreds of daily tourists coming over and have absolutely no respect to what this little village means to us, and just roam around with no purpose, and act all sneaky around our houses ‘’.

After the huge lunch that costed us just 7000 won, we had to keep moving and visit the historical residence zone of the village.

MUCHEOM-DAM is one of the most beautiful houses there. It used to be an annex of the head house of the much respected Yi Clan, who is a highly ranked government official during the JOSEON dynasty. One of the fun facts I found out about is that it had gender separated quarters for men and women, somehow like dormitories in our present time. This house was used for several purposes such as guest reception, memorial services, or just for relaxation and reading.

As we almost finished the tour of the village, we were heading back to our starting point, when suddenly our guide asked whether or not it was okay to say hello to an old friend of his, who also happens to live in one of the biggest houses there. As we arrived, the friend he talked about was an old woman whose husband had just recently passed away, and is now living alone in that huge house. But she was extremely kind and all smiles throughout our visit time. ‘’

Who says I live alone? Not with all of the nice people like you who come visit me’’, said the ninety something years old grand-ma with her incredibly good looking skin. Us four girls couldn’t help but tease her and ask for skin beauty secret tips from the grand-ma, and she acted very shy and yet was all happy to hear us laugh and be all talkative around her.

It made me realize that people here do not complain from having too much visitors, but they are complaining about having inconsiderate people passing by without engaging in any kind of conversation or showing the least amount of interest while visiting the village.

The Grand-ma is such a living history book of the village.

With that in mind, we left the village with so many memories and things to talk about to our friends. I personally came expecting nothing, but ended up with the greatest finds of all. I was once more reminded why I love this country. It was never the promises of endless shopping streets that brought me here in the first place. Nor the night and clubs scene that made leave my home and move in here. It was the warmth of such kind faces and their welcoming smiles that did. I still love Seoul, but I will make sure to visit such rural areas and breath in fresh air much more often from now on.

I MADE IT!! The show i religiously watch every wednesday contacted me and 40 other foreign chicas for the very special GET IT BEAUTY episode, dedicated to teaching Korean beauty secrets to foreign girls living in Korea.

It was such a magic day. I got to talk to Eugene, my long time kpop idol, Met the professional team behind the show, and went home with AWESOME MAKEUP. I was stunned how skinny Eugene was. She is much MUCH skinnier than what she looks like on tv. The other female host too is absolutely stunning, it was the biggest surprise actually!!

During the show, i got to give her a Moroccan traditional silver ring, as her wedding gift, and she loved it so much that she took of her stylist ring and put mine instead!!! ㅜㅠ..She was so nice and talked to us during every break, even though the shooting lasted for 6 hours;;

So, i started my weekend like the usual, taking the subway heading to Gang-nam. I had a Brunch date with my girls, i'm buying ^O-

As soon as i arrived, i had to try this new banana tarte from the Paris Croissant bakery.

BUT! As i was waiting for my girls at the Paris Baguette cafe, i suddenly see this tv crew followed by this huge crowd. It was KBS celebrity and entertainment show, having an interview with my all time fav Kim Gun-Mo.

Then, we Headed to this very special place, A Sheep Ranch!! In Korea, unbelievable huh?

GANG-NEUNG here we come!! Around the Pyeong-chang area, gang-neung is one of those quite and chill provinces not so far from Seoul, where city people can go to during the weekend and JUST DISCONNECT.

Its famous for its beach and its annual beach festival, and Seafood restaurants are endless and very affordable. If you are there, you will notice so many people selling onions and potatos on the side roads. They taste extemely good!

Ok, enough talking, here comes the photos!!

We were welcomed by this amazing weather!!

First destination was the Ode-San. A beautiful mountain area with temples.

This was my first experience of watching a buddhist ceremony. I was also very moved by the many parents who came to pray for their kids to pass their exams!

I was extremely pleased to find this tea house in the heart of such place!

I ordered Daechu tea, dattes tea, and every order comes with korean rice cake yay!!

My next destination wasn't as quiet hehe This is a very popular restaurant you should definelty stop by. It was so good we went there twice during our 2days and 1night stay!

Then, after lunch, we went to the Pyeong-chang resort, very famous destination for ski lovers!

Since it's not winter yet, we found another attraction about this place, the Cable Car! It's a 20minutes ride to the top for only 12.000 won. UNBELIEVABLE!

Once you make it to the top, you will be happily surprised to find a coffee shop, i was THRILLED! Then you d think there wouldn t be much to see, since it s a station on the mountain, WRONG. We found this course, actually, and you can go around and enjoy incriedible sceneries!

Seoul's VOGUE FASHION NIGHT OUT

Nothing makes you morning better than waking up feeling good in your skin, and a great cup of coffee to make your senses even more alert, especially if you are up to a Busy day.

As the much anticipated Fashion week is just around the corner, there are several events around the world taking place to celebrate Fashion. Seoul is no exception. So i headed to the busiest street in Seoul, MYEONG DONG, where VOGUE was holding the VOGUE FASHION NIGHT OUT event.

The event had many corners, but i only took part in 2. The first one, was trying this beautiful nail art sticker. Pretty expensive for me to buy it though. Since having one finger done was free, i gave it a try anyway.

The second part is, taking this paper, and visiting 3 stores among the many mentionned there, and get a stamp from each one to prove that you went in and checked them out. No purchase was again needed. All i needed to do is to get to 3 stores. I went for ADIDAS, BEAN POLE and H&M.

It was CRAZY! I had no idea that they were having such a blast! Not just in Adidas store, but i heard later that ZARA had also a DJ and Champagne, Bean pole had some really cute Models outside the store, H&M also, as you will see, had an awesome DJ playing etc

As for Adidas, not only tey had an awesome female dj, but they offered us the most delicious cute looking cookies and brownies!

They also offered this amazing collection by Jeremy scott!!!

Mission completed!! I had 3 stamps from the stores i visited, now im going to get my price!! It s a cute bag from VFNO, i ll post you a picture later.

YES BUNJEE JUMPED THE FEAR OUT OF MY SOUL LOL

We headed towards Nami island, this beautiful little piece of the Korean territory. In order toget there, you need to take the subway to Gapyeong station first. Then you take a cab or the bus, both wont cost much, to get to your fairy!

It looked a little gloomy at first but the weather went all spring in us THE WHOLE DAY.

Like i said, SPRING IN SEPTEMEBER.

Ah! Just perfect! The island was so cute, and had so many spots where you can photos. All i needed to find is a cafe..

WISH GRANTED!! They actually have one on that island. And even a convenient store!

Heading back to 'Land', and leaving Nami island, we spotted this thing hanging from there. Then we realized it was a station for those who enjoy Bunjee Jumping...never did it before..NOW ITS THE TIME!!

The first time you stand there on the edge, oh gosh...undescribable. Then once you have enough courage to jump, you d imagine that you ll scream right? Well you dont!! At least not till you start bouncing up and down hehehe Gosh THE BEST EXPERIENCE ever!!

Then, we had to try the local delicacy: ttag Galbi, chicken barbecue with mushrooms and korean rice cake..HEAVENLY.

Then i ordered ice buckweat Noodles to be refreshed..Perfect ending!

The day was far from being finished...As we headed back to Seoul, i saw on a friend s facebook page that in MYEONG DONG, there was some event related to Seoul Fashion Week in October: the VFNO (VOGUE FASHION NIGHT OUT). I had to go of course!!

This is a pretty descent HOE 회 restaurant around Jong ak station, exit number 5.

Their lunch set was very affordable and FULFILLING.

This porridge 'Juk' was unbelievably yummy !!

After lunch, i walked around Jong ak station for hours. And i discovered this New Cupcake Cafe, that i was went to in Sinsa dong

Everyone, welcome the CAFE GOODOVENING.

Cupcake and Coffee is their speciality. And they are Pretty good !

It s a 3 floor cafe, facing the river flow around the back of Jong ak area.

My first purchase! Choco & Coconut filled cupcake and cream >< Tastes as good as it sounds people!

I absolutely love the interior too. And it s brilliant that they have an open space, overlooking the beautiful river flow and the lights of the jong ak beautiful area.

As your sitting there, you can hear some of the live music performances of many street artists out there.

I love the attention given to the walls color and the framed cupcakes photos.

The light and the grey around the stairs area give off a very vintage feeling to this Cafe.

Is it just me or most girls love taking photos in the bathroom after fixing their make up? hehehe

Cant wait to tell you guys where i went next and the CRAZY decision i took!!

Its officially Chuseok!!

I Spent the holidays at my Korean family place, and got to experience this year again the atmosphere of such an important date to Koreans.

The best cook/ Most beautiful Korean lady ever!! My Korean mummy!

And here is Some of the wonders she made on that very special occasion. These are dishes presented on Chusoek morning to the spirit of the elders askig them for health and guidance in the future.

After that huge feast, we had to go excercice a bit. I LOVE KOREANS. ALWAYS '' Well being '' hehehe

As my Korean family lives around Namsan tour, it was just a few minutes walk until we reached the cable car station, got in (what a work out hehehe ) and reached the top of the mountain.

It was unbelievably packed with other families, probably coming for the same reason. There were some events going on, like traditional korean folk games you could enjoy for free and more.

That was pretty much it for that beautiful Chuseok, i spent the rest of the day at my family s, and earlier that morning after, i was craving some raw fish and CUPCAKES!..

It did take me some time to add these photos, as i have just recevered from..MY BREAK. Yeah you would think having some time off will refill the energy out of you, but due to some serious over FEEDING, im back fatter than ever TEARS

i can almost cry!

So, in Korea, We are about to celebrate a very loved annual holidays. I took the chance to go again to the Gwangjang market i visited last week, for a deeper chase of what s delicous and for some fashion finds.

Before meeting a friend of mine for a much late lunch at 4pm, i went there earlier alone as i also heard that it becomes a real treasure cave around feast time and other traditional celebrated holidays.

VINTAGE TREASURE FOUND!! Yes, right inside that traditonal market, i found this amazing vintage clothes large space! I couldn t believe my eyes! I found my much long wishlist items there, including Sleeveless denim jacket, and THE perfect big military jacket!! Both for less than 12 dollars!! And NEW!

My friend made it at last!! As hungry as we were, We had to choose something both yummy and BIG.

So we first ordered a Traditional bibim bab, a variety of marinated veggies sliced with other plants, lettuce and more, a sauce on top and spread sesame seed. It comes with rice. I didnt take the rice cuz i didnt wanna be stuffed from the get go. This was just an Appetizer you know kkk

Another lazy sunday, had brunch at the Moroccan restaurant, as my french ladies were missing REAL FOOD in Korea hehe

Then, after much eating, we had to feel a little guiltier, so we decided to walk around Itaewon. And how big of a difference it is to hang out there at daytime. It is just so different from the night scene!

We stopped to drool over the delicious looking pecan pies at this overly priced bakery there. But i know I LL BE BACK.

Then as we were going around the back alleys, we fous this amazing coffee shop in the most random zone of Itaewon! That s another must re visit location for sure!

So!! I had to go from one Student gathering to another, all Korea related!

The first was the HALLYU- Korean wave - convention in COEX, Seoul.

I was thrilled to know that i was part of the lucky selected for the tour around this intresting area in Korea called YEONGNAM.

Part of the NEW THINKING NEW KOREA project by the presidential council on nation branding, which aims to have foreigners and koreans living in Korea be involved in creating a clearer and more positive image of the country to those outside.

Its been such a fun ride as one of the bloggers writting about my life in Korea, a country i truly love. Now we have one more little mission, which is enjoying the tour and write about everything we loved and experienced. TOUGH WORK huh?

I also got to learn how to play korean instruments through I PHONE! Just what excactly I PHONE can t do ?!

Then, i headed to this other gathering, SISF 2011. Last dinner of the international students in Seoul, who spent a whole month developping ideas and projects, to make Seoul a much more convenient cosmopolitan and global city for foreigners as themselves.

After announcing the best creative idea (I PHONE application with everything you need to know about Seoul, from how to find housing to a fun place to spend your Saturday night), we were taken to this very delicious buffet, enjoyed the food and the compagny of our friends one last time as teammates!

Gwang jang market, remember the name

This could possibly have been the most exciting finding in Seoul so far to me!! I couldn t believe the amount of good and their diversity in one site!

Gwangjang market is Korea first and oldest market. Establisged in 1905, this market still holds Korea s true soul thanks to the vendors i must say.

The whole market is filled with Korean goods that can give you a full intro to Korea s true traditional taste. Food, clothes, and much more, you will definelty have to come more than once to check it all out.

How to get there:

After hours of going of exploring, it was time for us to stop and try some of the food cuz it was calling me out!!!! Here is one among the MANY little restaurants you will find. All their menus are somewhat the same, but all so good!

This what i had there for dinner: Hemul tang, a feast of seafood cooked in a medium spicy sauce, and Moden jom, fried veggies and fish and more. The side dishes kept on coming too!

MOROCCAN Delicacy in the heart of SEOUL

As a Moroccan myself, i might sound bias, but gosh '' MARAKECH NIGHT '' what a good restaurant!

Forget the never turn bad food we tend to get stuck with most of the weekdays. MARAKECH NIGHT is ORGANIC GOOD, and meat is still involved Folks!!

Lemon Chicken tajine, REAL Couscous, Hummus, Kebbab..and the list goes on. And for every dish a variety of styles as in Meat chicken lamb, and veggy friends ain t forgotten either! And the juices gosh..And Moroccan mint tea is my favourite after each meal there!

Let s talk INTERIOR, you step in, you are taken away by the Moroccan music and the decor that is so Romantic and Cozy too! They also this little space for couples, and another one for important meetings. I mean they really thought it through!

I have to tell you guys that the restaurant is ran by a Moroccan family, i mean the whole staff, from the cook to the waiters, ALL ONE BIG FAMILY! And i love how they take time to laugh with each other, stop to check on you, freebies that always make you even happier etc..I just love going there.

MARAKECH NIGHT offers a varied menu all weekdays, but, from Friday to Sunday, they have an All day buffet, plus the usual menu of course! So, for all of you party people, you may wanna stop there on friday or saturday night before hitting the floor! Or enjoy the healthiest most fulfilling weekend Brunch whenever you manage to wake up throughout the whole day hehe

We are at the BUTTERFINGER PANCAKES, for the Greatest Brunch Ever~ It's a American style brunch restaurant with Pancakes as their specialty, among other delicacies like waffles and crepes. But they seriously have an amaziiiiiiing menu, where you can see that pancakes aint just about blueberry or honey on them. Plus, the brunch menu is also as breathtaking, stuffed omelettes, veggies, soups, hamburgers, etc...Imma show you more in the next post -O^

Apgujeong. Seoul most expensive area in Seoul along with Gangnam. Home of celebrities and the rich in Korea, the BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE spot you know.

Before heading to a Party i was invited there, we had to stop at this beautiful coffee house there, not a franchise though. i`ll tell u about it its name later, cant remember much from that night i must tell ya..

Ehwa Univ. Neighborhood A last. I can t believe it took this much to make it there at last. It s so Girly like around here, the small intimate streets and alleys, the infinite line up of Coffee shops and make up stores..

EHWA is KOREA s representative all girls university, and is one of the top 5 most prestigious educational institutions there. I heard a pretty intresting fact about from a korean friend mine that said guys tend to love more girls that attend or graduated from Ehwa univ. She said that they have this femine, girly all clean cut image, of a young hard working girl, stylish everyday and looking her despite the loads of work..Of course its a little too dreamy dreamy lol but i did notice a LOT of girls in and around the campus, that are pretty true the previous description.. SIGH

After lunch, we headed to The chocolate Cafe~ Right across from Charlie Brown`s.
Since we had Ttak kalbi (sort of Chicken marinated and cooked on a hot stone, with veggies and rice cakes) for lunch, we decided not to order much but 2 americanos, but somehow these babes ended up joining the party;;; couldnt resist and not order chocolate at the CHOCOLATE cafe .

The amount of Coffee given at this place is really generous compared to any other coffee franchise i ve been to in Seoul.

The interior was simple yet warm.

Isn`t it weird that there are more cafes in korea than places for Makkoli and soju? Try going to Samchong dong and you`ll know what i mean.

First of all, it`s one of the prettiest,cleanest neighborhoods in Seoul.

For Waffles lovers, you get to choose between the maaaaaany cafes over there. Seriously, you might spend the whole day just moving from one cafe to another, but they all offer delicious waffles and coffee more or less for the same price. So you just need to settle for the mood and interior you like!

I unfortunatly don`t remember the name of the cafe we went to, but here are photos taken at one of the many waffles place in Samchong dong, remember the name~

To most foreigners who`ve been to Insadong street before, traditional rice cake cafes, souvenirs from korea and other korean traditional goods and restaurants would come up to their minds, but i recently discovered a much more exciting thing there..a vintage toys store!

I was so excited that it was almost embarassing lol For just 1000원, you get to go back in time, and see figurines of your favourite cartoons, anime or manhwa characters, the old and the new ones!!

check it out, it`s on the opposite side across from that big gallery in insadong! 2nd floor!

Afterwards, we headed to Sam-chong dong, one of my favourite areas in Seoul, more known as the Waffles zone! Curious much? Check out my next post soon~

Work hard. Party hard, this has always been my motta in life. After such a long semester of exams and non stop assignements, i had to take some time off from all of that drama and just...DANCE!

The destination is DE DROP, in Choengdam dong (around Apgujeong). One of the trendiest lounge/club/bar in Seoul. But what`s really special about it is that its owner is a male veterant model! Even the people that go chilling there are moslty models or in the fashion industry. So it`s a MUST GO for those who appreciate eye candy and selected crowds rather a whole binch of people stacked in one place...

Some of the next photos are from dedrop.co.kr and others are from meetup.com an online community that organizes many events, or attend some together. Which was the case, as we went for a thursday ladies night at De drop! Beautiful night.

Forced Break in Gangwon-do

I knew i had so much to prepare as im heading towards a new decisive chapter in my life, Grad school, but i couldnt turn down the offer. My homestay family, i should just call them MY FAMILY cuz i love them so much..They invited me to a week of touring around Gangwon do province, Pyeongchang to be exact!

I absolutely loved the waking up every morning on the birds' sound, as we stayed at this beautiful pension called, Magic within the forest? if roughly translated from Korean;;..It was so peaceful and clean. And we had pretty much everything we need to cook and all BUT! Here is the best part, it was such a GOURMET WEEK!

There isn t possibly a famous place to eat that we didnt stop by! Enough said, let's bring out the evidence!
